Sometimes when you are the governor of the Great State of New York you have to put politics aside and do something completely apolitical—not because you need to score cheap points with a specific constituency, but because it’s the right thing to do, no matter what. On Wednesday, Governor Cuomo cut the ribbon on something called the “Cadillac House.” Bold move. Apolitical move. Was he satisfied? Hell no. Yesterday Cuomo did the least political thing a sitting governor of New York could do: signed an executive order throwing the state into the conflict between Palestine and Israel.

Cuomo’s order stipulated that any entity boycotting Israeli businesses under the Palestinian-supported Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, would also be boycotted by the State of New York.

“As a Democrat, I always took for granted that there was a natural relationship with Israel that was unquestioned, and it was that way for many, many years. And it’s one of the things that gave us pride as Democrats,” Cuomo told a group assembled at The Harvard Club.

“You now have aspects of the Democratic Party that are being critical of Israel as being disproportionate in its response. Don’t get me wrong—I still think the Democratic Party and the leadership of the Democratic Party and the candidates of the Democratic Party are far and away stronger supporters of Israel than of any other party—not to get political,” Cuomo said, apolitically.

“Today, I’m going to sign an Executive Order that says very clearly, we are against the BDS movement, and it’s very simple. If you boycott against Israel, New York will boycott you. If you divert revenues from Israel, New York will divert revenues from you. If you sanction Israel, New York will sanction you, period.”

Palestine Legal, an organization that defends those who are attacked for speaking out in favor of the rights of Palestinians, released a totally political statement, calling Cuomo’s order “a blatantly unconstitutional attack on freedom of speech…reminiscent of McCarthyism.”

Donna Lieberman, the executive director of the NYCLU, said, ”Whenever the government creates a blacklist based on political views it raises serious First Amendment concerns, and this is no exception. We will be looking very closely at this executive order."

Look as closely as you want, Donna, Cuomo's looking even more closely at you.

Bills to accomplish such a boycott have been introduced in both the Assembly and the Senate, but bicameral representative democracy is bullshit: only executive orders come from the heart.

“In New York, we’re also a place of action and passing legislation even when you have good intent can often be a tedious affair, let me say that. Tedious is fine, right? And we want to take immediate action because we want the world to know and we want Israel to know that we are on their side.”

Hear that, Israel? You can rest easy knowing the Governor of New York is on your side, in case you weren't aware of that when he visited you in 2014.
