Cooling centers

The findings come from New York City Comptroller Brad Lander's analysis of the locations and accessibility of cooling centers.
The agency issued a heat advisory from 11 a.m. Thursday morning through Friday evening at 8 p.m.
There are 550 city-sponsored cooling centers throughout the five boroughs, where you can escape the summertime slog without having to spend a dime. But to most New Yorkers, most of the buildings are more commonly referred to as libraries and senior centers.
The city has issued an excessive heat warning advisory, with heat indices over 105 degrees expected this week.
The distribution of NYC cooling centers is uneven: Some 353,182 individuals aged 65 or older live more than a half-mile from one.
A reporter and a photographer, both in their twenties, tried to seek shelter in a designated cooling center. But they were turned away simply because of their age. Quick, someone start an Indiegogo fundraiser!
