This morning's sunshine is quickly giving way to clouds as a cold front over the Great Lakes slowly makes its way eastward. The front won't actually arrive until late tomorrow but the southerly breeze ahead of the front will gradually increase the clouds and humidity as the day progresses. We'll hit the lower 80s this afternoon and might even see a stray shower by the early evening.

Rain is more likely overnight, especially north of the city in the lower Hudson Valley and in the Catskills. More rain is possible tomorrow and there will be a slight chance of scattered showers or thunderstorms later in the day as the cold front creeps closer. The frontal passage on Saturday night will lead into a really nice Sunday. Look for mostly sunny skies and a high in the low 80s to round out the weekend. Monday will be much the same but there will be another chance of rain Monday night before dry weather returns for the middle of next week.

Have you noticed that we haven't had any really hot weather in a while? The last time we hit 90 degrees was eleven days ago. The Weather Channel's 10-day forecast (which, oddly, is a 15-day forecast) shows no day with a high greater than 85 degrees for the next two weeks. Could summer be over?

The cooler weather is a result of a persistent trough in the jet stream over eastern North America the past couple of weeks. That dip is likely to hang around for the next couple of weeks, especially once an omega block, a strong ridge in the jet stream, develops over central Canada. Until that pattern breaks down, which might happen toward the end of August, the northeastern US will generally see temperatures at or slightly below normal.
