The author of Blood in the Water: The Attica Uprising of 1971 and Its Legacy, filed a lawsuit Thursday against the acting commissioner of the New York State Department of Corrections Anthony Annucci, alleging the censorship violates her constitutional rights to free speech and due process.


Local residents in the town of Attica don't mind the stigma of the prison uprising that took place here 50 years ago, but they remain clear-eyed about what really happened.


Fifty years ago this week, September 9-13, 1971, incarcerated men at the Attica Correctional Facility in upstate New York took control of the state prison to demand humane treatment and better living.


A spokesman for the prison system says it's an unusual move, but that they do not "disclose the specific reasons why an inmate may be transferred" to a new facility.


The bloody Attica prison uprising is 40 years old today.
