Tragedy struck a young mother Friday night as she was drinking with her boyfriend on another friends roof. Monica Perez, a 25-year-old mother of one and the estranged wife of a NYPD officer, fell seven stories around 3:30 A.M.. Her boyfriend immediately called 911 and she was rushed to nearby St. Barnabas Hospital where she was pronounced dead at 4:56 A.M.
An empty 40-ounce bottle of Olde English 800 malt liquor was still on the roof yesterday, as well as a half-burned white candle and a broken Precious Moments candleholder.
"They were all drinking, hanging out. They're all just good friends," said Febus' friend Crystal Rivera, 26, who lives in the building and heard his screams.
Initially the Police took the two men who were on the roof with Perez in for questioning about the tragedy (some neighbors said they heard fighting) but have since declared the death an accident. Perez leaves behind a 4-year-old daughter - who as of yesterday hadn't been told of her mother's passing. "She's too young. She already asked, 'Where's Mommy?'" Perez's niece told the News.
The lesson here is a good one: Please, please, please be careful when drinking on rooftops, especially in the hot summer months. There is a reason many buildings keep their roofs off limits.
In less tragic falling news, a 4-year-old in Albany managed to fall from an 11th-floor window and survived (with a broken skull, leg and other injuries). His 21-year-old mother is being charged with endangering the welfare of a child.
