Stop what you are doing and take a moment to remember exactly where you were the moment you found out the obvious was true: Anderson Cooper is a homosexual. After years of avoiding the topic of his sexuality in public—has it really been five years since Out's Glass Closet Cooper/Foster cover?—Cooper wrote a nice letter on the topic to The Daily Beast's Andrew Sullivan. The important bit? "The fact is, I'm gay, always have been, always will be, and I couldn’t be any more happy, comfortable with myself, and proud."
The letter was kicked off by Entertainment Weekly's recent story on the new breed of celebrities coming out with little consequences, a topic which Cooper says he has "thought about for years. Even though my job puts me in the public eye, I have tried to maintain some level of privacy in my life. Part of that has been for purely personal reasons. I think most people want some privacy for themselves and the people they are close to."
Apparently, however, things have changed in the last few years for Cooper. He began "to consider whether the unintended outcomes of maintaining my privacy outweigh personal and professional principle. It’s become clear to me that by remaining silent on certain aspects of my personal life for so long, I have given some the mistaken impression that I am trying to hide something - something that makes me uncomfortable, ashamed or even afraid. This is distressing because it is simply not true."
And so here we are. Anderson Cooper, silver-haired Vanderbilt scion and one of the few big "names" in news these days, is a homosexual. This really is something we thought everybody already knew, but there you have it. You can read Cooper's full (very nice) letter here. Now the question is: Who's next? Because it really is starting to seem we're hitting a tipping point where the barely closeted are going to start hurting their careers by lying to the world.
