A 22-year-old woman was waiting for her Lyft driver in Chelsea early Wednesday morning when the male driver of a black SUV pulled up next to her and told her to get in. Moments later, the driver took the woman to Kips Bay, stopped the car, and raped her.
NBC reports the woman had hailed a Lyft driver at roughly 2 a.m. Wednesday near the corner of 17th Street and Seventh Avenue. The suspected rapist reportedly pulled up roughly a minute later, told the woman he was her hired driver, and encouraged her to get in the vehicle.
Police sources told the Daily News the driver had no stickers or placards indicating he worked for Lyft, or any other ride-hailing app. According to police, the man drove his victim to East 26th Street between Second and Third Avenues, raped her, and then let her go. The victim later checked herself into NYU Hospital and was listed in stable condition.
An investigation into the sexual assault is currently ongoing. Police have no description of the suspect, and no arrests have been made.
In May, a man posing as an Uber driver picked up a woman on the Lower East Side and proceeded to rob her while threatening to rape and shoot her. The woman managed to escape the car after handing over her belongings.
