A 26-year-old woman was beaten and raped on the front stoop of an apartment building in Morningside Heights early Saturday morning.
Police say the victim was walking to her boyfriend's apartment just after 5 a.m. yesterday morning when she was attacked by a man near the intersection of Manhattan Avenue and Cathedral Parkway. She told police that the suspect, who was pushing a red bicycle, approached her from behind, threw her onto a nearby stoop, then assaulted and raped her.
A police source told the Post that the woman screamed for help, but no one apparently heard her. She was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital where she is recovering.
"Her face was bruised. She was sedated and she had a tube, a respirator and a brace on her neck," Carlos Cardenales, who is a neighbor of the boyfriend, told the Post. “I’m so sad I didn’t hear anything." He added that there have been problems in the building and residents have been requesting surveillance cameras be installed. "I’ve had to stop fights," he said. "All the women in the building are scared."
Police described the suspect as a white male between the ages of 20 and 25 years old, with brown hair. He was last seen wearing a blue shirt, dark jeans and Converse sneakers.
