A woman was sexually abused and almost raped while walking down a Manhattan street yesterday morning, police say.

The incident occurred around 4 a.m. on July 30, according to the NYPD, who describe the attempted rape this way: "A 20 year old female was walking south bound on 5th Avenue towards west 8th street when an unknown male suspect approached her and engaged her in a conversation. The suspect then grabbed the victim from behind, and sexually abused her by forcible touching in an apparent rape attempt."

The victim was able to fight off her attacker, who fled. Police describe the suspect as a being 5'6" with a medium build and wearing a dark colored baseball cap and backpack.
