An 85-year-old woman was killed and a 90-year-old was seriously injured in a freak accident at a Brooklyn car wash this afternoon. Witnesses told the Daily News the pair had been looking at their car when a car wash employee in another vehicle struck them repeatedly.
The incident occurred in Marine Park just before 3 p.m., at a car wash near Gerritsen Avenue and Avenue U. Police say the victims were inspecting their silver Honda Accord, which "had just been rear-ended by a black Jeep Liberty that exited the car wash process."
A car wash worker allegedly got into the Jeep and reversed, hitting the building, and then accelerated, striking the elderly pair. "Then, in a panic, he reversed the jeep, hitting the two victims again, before moving forward and hitting them a third time, horrified witnesses said. The employee tried to flee the area, only to slam into two parked cars and a large planter," the Daily News reports.
After police and EMS arrived, the woman, who was unconscious and unresponsive with severe trauma to her head and body, was pronounced dead at the scene. The 90-year-old suffered severe trauma to the head and the body and was taken to Luther Medical Center in critical condition.
Police say the car wash employee remained on the scene, however witnesses tell the News that the driver ran off.
