Police are investigating the death of a woman who was found unconscious and unresponsive in a trash compactor of a Manhattan apartment building.

Authorities say that just before 5 p.m. on Tuesday, police officers responded to 1 Irving Place and found a 48-year-old woman inside the compactor. EMS pronounced the woman dead at the scene.

A building employee reportedly contacted police after initially discovering her The worker's colleague told the Daily News that the woman went "down the chute and slid down like garbage... She fell from the 27th floor."

Security camera footage reportedly showed the woman walking around by herself before the incident. Her purse was also found near the chute.

Residents received an email from the building, advising them not to use the chute.

The woman's identity has not been released, pending family notification. We'll update as more information becomes available.
