A woman was fatally struck by a taxi driver on the Upper East Side on Saturday.
According to police, the incident happened around 2:45 p.m. yesterday at the intersection of Madison Avenue and East 60th Street. Amelia Sterental, a 76-year-old Miami native, was walking northbound in the crosswalk on East 60th Street when she was hit by the cab, who was turning left onto East 60th from Madison.
A passerby performed CPR on Sterental, while the three female passengers in the cab bolted immediately, according to the Post. The victim was taken to New York-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center in critical condition, where she was declared dead.
A witness told the Post the driver had "made a fast turn," but cops couldn't say whether Sterental had the crosswalk light. The taxi driver stayed on the scene. No charges have been filed. Cops add that the investigation is ongoing.
