A 69-year-old woman was fatally struck by the driver of MTA bus in midtown this morning, while crossing 57th Street between 8th Avenue and Broadway.

According to the NYPD, the victim was crossing to the north side of West 57th Street around 9:40 a.m., when she was struck by the driver of an X5 Staten Island-Midtown bus traveling west. The report alleges that the victim was crossing mid-block, and suffered "severe body trauma." She was found unconscious and unresponsive on the scene, and was pronounced dead upon arrival at Cornell Hospital.

"I walked over and she was moving her arms. She was on her stomach. She was bleeding. There was a lot of blood," one witness told DNAInfo.

According to another witness, "I walked by and saw a large amount of blood behind the driver's side front wheel of the bus. 57th was... closed between 7th and 10th." ABC reports that the front left side of the bus hit the victim—she was knocked over, and subsequently run over.

The bus driver stayed on the scene, and the NYPD's Collision Squad is investigating. The victim has yet to be identified.
