Woman Allegedly Tried To Steal Baby At Crown Heights Chabad Headquarters

A woman allegedly tried to abduct an 11-month-old girl at the Chabad Lubavitch World Headquarters in Crown Heights on Wednesday.

The child's 27-year-old mother told police she brought the baby in her stroller into the building at 770 Eastern Parkway yesterday morning. Police said the mother went to the bathroom and left the stroller outside, and when she returned the infant was missing from her stroller.

Police say a 26-year-old woman, Chana Alexander, lifted the baby from her stroller and left the headquarters—cops caught up with her and the infant just a block from the building.

A worker at the headquarters told NBC New York she spotted the alleged attempted kidnapper with the baby, but did not realize she was not the child's mother. "That's crazy, that's kidnapping," she told reporters. "You don't take nobody's baby and walk away. You didn't come here with no baby."

An NYPD spokesperson told Gothamist Alexander was taken to Kings County Hospital for psychiatric evaluation, but has since been charged with second degree kidnapping. The infant was unharmed, police said.
