Big fireworks are still exploding all over New York City late into the evening—with nightly shows dotting the skyline that are increasingly irking sleep-deprived residents.
Complaints to 311 about fireworks have increased by 314 times this month compared to this time last year. A total of 8,477 complaints were made June 1st to 20th, compared to 27 last year. On June 20th alone, there were 2,092 complaints to 311 about fireworks citywide.
All five boroughs are seeing complaints too, mostly in Brooklyn, which had 3,763 complaints to 311 from June 1st to 20th.
Manhattan and the Bronx had the next highest number, 2,609 and 1,282, respectively.
Over the weekend, one witness saw "50 or 60 people" shooting off Roman candles in the street in Crown Heights, according to ABC7.
In Yonkers, fireworks may have sparked a fire at an apartment building, leaving six families displaced.
Firework usage is increasing all over the country—like in Hartford, Connecticut, Salem, Massachusetts, and Roanoke, Virginia. In NYC, many appear like professional, high-quality displays.
Some fireworks are being sold at a discount after demand dropped for the displays during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic in New York City. In Brooklyn, one reporter spoke to people offering to sell fireworks for a buy-one get-two-free deal after purchasing some from Pennsylvania. Along I-78 in Pennsylvania, fireworks suppliers have seen an uptick in sales they attributed to boredom post-quarantine, Lehigh Valley Live reported.
