Late last night, a tanker carrying 12,000 gallons of fuel crashed with a car in Bellmore, Long Island, on the Sunrise Highway. Seven thousand gallons of fuel spilled onto the road and then ignited.
According to Newsday, "The crash occurred at 11:52 p.m. Tuesday, when police said the eastbound tanker truck rear-ended the Hyundai, which was stopped at a red light on Sunrise Highway near Newbridge Road. As a result, police said the tanker flipped onto its side—then skidded toward Brevoort Place and into the garage bay of a Harley-Davidson shop."
The driver of the fuel tanker and the Hyundai were taken to hospitals; their conditions are not known. Additionally, twelve parked cars and four homes were damaged.
Officials do not think ice and environmental factors or alcohol played a role in the crash. They are still investigating the incident.
