We know the world is supposed to end in 2012 or whatever, but the city seems to be getting a jump start on the mass destruction. On New Year's day one man was witness to a "15' tower of flames" erupting from a manhole (video below) on Bleecker Street and Leroy Street. Thankfully instead of running for his life, he had the presence of mind to film the event for the benefit of the Internet:

As one Reddit commenter summed up, "it's awesome when high voltage shit goes bang." Except when that bang keeps you stuck on a school bus for hours on end. MYFoxNY reports that about 75 handicapped people were evacuated from the Shield Institute and are being kept inside a school bus while the FDNY investigates two manhole fires in East Harlem. CBS 2 reports that they have been transported to another care center, but that 106th Street through 109th Street between Park Ave and Lexington Ave are closed off.

The fires broke out around 9:30 a.m., and were reportedly caused by melting snow and salted roads eroding the cables. See what your unquenchable lust has wrought?! If the city takes four days to put out the manhole fire on your block, you have no one to blame but yourselves.
