An escape artist was hospitalized yesterday after nearly drowning during an underwater stunt gone wrong.
Spencer Horsman was performing at the State Theater in New Brunswick yesterday as part of a showcase organized by magician Criss Angel. At around 1 p.m., he attempted to escape from a locked, metal-chain wrapped Plexiglas box full of water as part of a stunt, but was unable to undo the last lock. He was in the water tank for about two-and-a-half minutes before witnesses noticed he was in distress—he was rescued via crane, and taken to Robert Wood Johnson Medical Center. The stunt, based on Harry Houdini's famous "Water Torture Cell" escape, has been nearly deadly for Horsman before—in June, he lost consciousness while performing it at Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut.
The good news is, Horsman appears to be recovering:
