A devastating five-alarm fire erupted at a Sunnyside, Queens factory Wednesday night, raging for hours as over 150 firefighters rushed to extinguish the blaze. The cause of the fire remains unknown, but large amounts of wood, lacquer, and paint thinners stowed inside the building helped fuel the flames, which could easily be seen from much of the surrounding neighborhood and beyond.
Here's a stunning video showing the breadth of the conflagration:
According to an FDNY spokesperson, the fire began shortly before 5:30 p.m. last night at 43-34 37th Street near Queens Boulevard, and was finally under control at 11:22 p.m. The entire millwork factory was destroyed in the flames, but workers were able to save surrounding buildings on the block.
Four firefighters suffered minor injuries and were treated at nearby hospitals, the spokesperson said this morning. No civilians were hurt during the fire.
FDNY Chief James Leonard told reporters Wednesday that the first units to respond to the fire became trapped by flames behind them.
"They were able to extricate themselves and get themselves out of the building safely. And that point we decided to go to an exterior attack," Leonard told ABC.
