The NYPD has released surveillance images of a man they say attempted to rape a woman in the lobby of her building on First Avenue around 3 a.m. Sunday morning. Investigators say the man, who is described as being between 25 and 30 years old, about 5'9" inches tall and weighing 170 pounds, was caught on a surveillance camera following the woman into her building. He then allegedly pushed the 27-year-old woman to the floor and tried to rape her. Here's chilling surveillance video taken outside the building:

Fortunately, the woman fought off her attacker and the suspect fled the scene. Anyone with information about the case is being asked to contact Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-577-TIPS, by texting TIP577 to CRIMES, or by going to NYPDCrimeStoppers.com.

DNAinfo recalls that in September, a man was arrested after nearly killing a woman while raping her in broad daylight on East Eighth Street. Reaching further back, in 2008 a woman claimed that two police officers raped her in her East Village apartment; the cops were acquitted of rape, but were convicted of official misconduct.
