An East New York convenience store clerk reportedly brandished a machete in self defense early Saturday, attempting to contain an armed robber who then fired two shots in his direction, striking a bystander.

At 5:00 on Saturday morning, a man entered Stanley Convenience Store at 669 Stanley Avenue, near the corner of Hendrix Street in East New York. He then "brandished a firearm" and demanded cash, before going behind the counter himself and removing an "undetermined amount" of money and cigarettes, according to the NYPD.

As the suspect attempted to flee, the clerk, one Bidel Elmontiher, grabbed a machete from behind the counter, and used it to hack the length of rope that was holding the door open, CBS2 reports. He then ran out and attempted to hold the door shut from the outside, according to the News. The suspect then fired two shots through the glass, missing the clerk but hitting a 47-year-old man walking past Stanley Convenience on the other side of the street.

"He shot [at] me. Shot at my head. I felt the air," Elmontiher told CBS2. “I could feel it.”

A witness said, "He had a machete, was going to try to use it, but you can’t beat anybody with a machete when they got a 9 millimeter."

An NYPD spokesman did not confirm that a machete was used, but said that Elmontiher attempted to hold the door closed from the outside.

The suspect fled the scene, and the shooting victim was taken to Brookdale University Hospital, where he was treated and released for a gunshot wound to his left ankle.

Surveillance footage captured the suspect, who was last seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and black jeans and sneakers, both inside and outside of the store. He is described as approximately 6'3" and 270 pounds, between the ages of 35 and 45.
