A massive three-alarm fire broke out at a commercial/residential building in Brooklyn last night. According to the FDNY the fire started at 2900 Stillwell Avenue in Coney Island just before 8 p.m. on Thursday night. Within 20 minutes, the entire exterior of the building was engulfed in a cocoon of flames, leading to several partial collapses.
The fire is believed to have started on the second floor of the three-story building, which also includes a deli. Nearly 140 firefighters were called to the scene to battle the blaze. It took over two hours to get it under control; two people, including one firefighter, suffered minor injuries, though at least one of the people refused medical attention.

It's unclear what sparked the fire; fire officials say they are still on the scene today assessing the damage. When pressed for comment, Billy Joel just shook his head sadly, muttering something about Bernie Goetz and Rock and Roller Cola wars.
