More than 100 firefighters responded to a building collapse in Midwood around 11:30 p.m. on Monday night after a driver apparently lost control of his car on Avenue P and slammed into the two-story structure at the corner of East 5th Street.

According to WABC 7, "The vehicle crashed all the way into a vacant business, undermining the stability of the two-story corner building," 496 Avenue 9.

There are apartments above the business, but no tenants were home at the time of the crash.

The car's driver reportedly tried to flee after the crash. PIX 11 reports, "Moments later, the man climbed out of the rubble and allegedly tried to run away from the scene, but was apprehended by neighborhood patrol members until police took him in custody," witnesses said.

The driver is being "held on suspicion of driving under the influence and leaving the scene of the accident," WABC 7 reports.
