[UPDATE BELOW] An NYPD officer was arrested last night and charged with attempted rape, among other things. Peter Ciollo, 29, was arrested on Staten Island after he tried to "perform a sex act with the underage girl on July 4th at an unknown residence," sources tell the Post. He was off-duty. The NYPD confirms that Ciollo was charged with attempted rape, unlawfully dealing alcohol to a child, endangering the welfare of a child, and sexual abuse.

Ciollo is expected to be arraigned today, and we'll update as more information becomes available. Sources tell NBC New York that Ciollo knew the girl, and multiple news outlets report her age as 16.

For what it's worth, the NY Post's sources have this to add (emphasis added): "The encounter between the married 29-year-old cop and the intoxicated victim may have started out as consensual but eventually went too far, sources said." We're not lawyers, but something tells us things "went too far" a lot earlier, given the age of consent in New York State is 17.

The Staten Island DA expects to arraign Ciollo today.

Update 11:25 a.m.: Based on information from a Google cache version of Ciollo's wedding announcement in the Staten Island Advance, he is a graduate of Monsignor Farrell High School, Oakwood, and earned a bachelor of science degree in network management from DeVry University, North Brunswick, N.J.

Update 1:15 p.m.:The Staten Island Advance reports that Ciollo's wife "walked in on him and the underage female in a compromising position on the Fourth of July." The Daily News's sources have a whole lot more: "Ciollo gave the girl alcohol before letting her drive his car. The cop allegedly provided her with more to drink before they returned to his home."

Once there, Ciollo allegedly showed the girl porn, asked her to remove her shirt, and then got her into bed, where "he had the teen climb on top of him while he rubbed his genitals against hers, the sources said." And at some point his wife walked into the room.
