Update 2:47 p.m.: The NYPD released the following statement regarding this morning's incident:

At 0820 hours this morning, a 46 year old male entered the Food Emporium store at West 49th Street and 8th Avenue and became aggressive, belligerent and swearing toward workers in the store. A uniformed police officer on a foot post was alerted and he confronted the male. The subject began to struggle with the officer and they fell to the ground outside the store. As the suspect got back on his feet, he displayed an 8- inch knife and approached the officer and two other officers who were coming to his assistance. The officers ordered the suspect to drop the knife and he continued to approach them with the knife in his hand. At this point, one officer and a sergeant fired at the suspect. The male was pronounced deceased at the scene. The knife was recovered. A 46 year old female bystander suffered an apparent graze wound to her wrist.

One police officer suffered a minor wound apparently sustained during the prior struggle with the suspect. It is unclear how he sustained this injury, but it was not caused by a gunshot. The female bystander and the injured police officer were transported to Bellvue Hospital. Their injuries are considered minor. The suspect is a 46 year old male white, whose name is not being release pending family notification. The investigation continues and is being conducted by our Force Investigation Division.
