[UPDATE BELOW] A man was hospitalized in critical condition after falling down an elevator shaft in Midtown.

According to the FDNY, the man—reportedly a construction worker—was taken to Bellevue Hospital after tumbling down the shaft at a construction site at West 46th Street near 8th Avenue around 12:38 p.m. The site is the future home of the luxury Riu Hotel at Times Square.

The hotel tops out at 30 stories, though it's unclear how far the man fell.

Update, 3:10 p.m.: According to the Daily News, the 25-year-old worker was pronounced dead at 1:26 p.m. He fell 24 floors.
