Update Below An 77-year-old woman was struck and killed by a cab driver while walking in Chelsea on Thursday afternoon, police said.
According to an NYPD spokesperson, the crash occurred at around 1 p.m. at the intersection of 8th Avenue and 22nd Street. The pedestrian was rushed to Bellevue Hospital and pronounced dead shortly after.
The cab driver is in his 80s, police said, and remained at the scene. One witness said the driver initially tried to flee and was stopped, though police could not immediately confirm that account.

The death comes amid an uptick in pedestrians deaths in New York City. Total traffic fatalities are up more than 20 percent since this time last year, increasing from 127 to 104, according to NYPD data.
Update, Friday 11:30 a.m.: Police have charged the cab driver, 82-year-old Daniel Fusaro, with leaving the scene of an accident, failure to yield to a pedestrian, failure to obey a traffic signal and failure to exercise due care.
