[UPDATE BELOW] A 13-year-old girl was killed by a driver this morning in Queens, and a second 13-year-old girl was also injured in the collision. Police sources tell the Daily News the girls were walking to school when the driver ran them over.

The girls were just two blocks from Robert H. Goddard middle school in Ozone Park when they were struck by the driver around 6:40 a.m., at the intersection of Cross Bay Boulevard and 149th Avenue. One girl was pronounced dead at Jamaica Hospital, while the other was transported there in stable condition.

An NYPD spokesperson said the driver remained on the scene and no charges have been filed yet, but the investigation is ongoing. Police have not released the name of the deceased pending family notification.

Update: The NYPD has identified the deceased as 13-year-old Jazmine Marin. According to a preliminary investigation, Marin and the other girl were walking east across Cross Bay Boulevard when the 55-year-old driver of a green Chevy sedan, heading south, ran into them. Marin sustained severe head trauma. The other girl sustained a leg injury and is currently in stable condition.

Despite the proximity to the middle school, residents told NBC New York that "in the 40 years they've lived in the area, they've never seen a crossing guard."
