[UPDATE BELOW] A cyclist on the Williamsburg Bridge was hospitalized in serious condition after losing control of her bike attempting to avoid another cyclist.

The woman, reportedly in her mid-20s, was riding down the south side of the bridge's bike path in Brooklyn yesterday around 9:40 p.m. when another cyclist apparently passed suddenly on her left, causing her to lose control.

"A guy on another bicycle came out of nowhere and almost collided with her," a police source told the Daily News. "She lost control and hit a garbage can and landed on her face."

"She got scared and she lost control," the source added. "When we got here she was screaming."

Yawen Chen, a cyclist who passed the crash immediately after it happened, said the woman had "lots of blood on the side of her face."

"By the time I saw her, a cop had just reached her, but more help was on the way," she said. "I hope she's okay... looks to be a really bad crash."

A spokesperson for the FDNY said the woman was taken to Bellevue Hospital. Her condition is unknown, but we'll update as more information becomes available.

Update, 3 p.m.: Another witness, Francisca Molina, sent the following additional account:

I stopped to see if they needed help. There was a guy calling 911 and another taking care of the girl, that one was her boyfriend. She was unconscious but breathing in a weird way.

Five minutes later the police arrived and they moved the girl. Her face was completely deformed. She was covered in blood, bruises and her front head was swollen. I think she broke her nose. Absolutely devastating and shocking.

Then the police sat her on the floor, leaning on the fence, I don’t know why they did that. They should kept her laying down on the floor. The ambulance arrived after 15 minutes. And they took her to it in a chair, not in a stretcher. Her head was moving as they were going down. It was very weird the way the police was taking care of her.

The boyfriend told me that they were going down the bridge when a guy pass next to them really fast. He scared her and she collided with the trash can. Of course the guy didn’t stop.
I can’t believe how fast some guys can to on the bridge, they don’t respect anyone, is not a race path. Even when the police was there, and a lot of people was stood there one guy passed really really fast not caring at all about what happened.
