[UPDATE BELOW] An 8-year-old boy was fatally run over by a tractor trailer truck driver on Northern Boulevard in Queens shortly before 8 a.m. today. According to the NYPD, the truck driver was turning left onto Northern Boulevard from 61st Street when he struck the boy, who has been identified as Noshat Nahian. An NYPD spokesman said Nahian was crossing the six lane boulevard with his 11-year-old sister, who was not injured.

Nahian was pronounced DOA at Elmhurst hospital. The truck driver remained on the scene and the NYPD says the "investigation ongoing in regards to possible summonses and arrests."

One family friend told DNAinfo, "I just saw the truck turn and the sister screamed. His face was bloody and sallow. His limbs looked broken." Another witness noted that "a small red holiday gift bag he'd been carrying was left lying in the intersection."

Another witness tells the Post the boy's mother "was out of her brain. She was crying and asking ‘what’s going on?’"

Update 1:07 p.m.: The NYPD just announced that the driver, Mauricio Osorio-Palominos, 51, has been arrested. The Newark, NJ resident is charged with Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of Motor Vehicle and Operating vehicle in violation of safety rules.

Nahian's death comes six weeks after a 9-year-old boy was killed by an out-of-control SUV driver in Fort Greene. Last month a new advocacy group, Three Children Too Many, held a march for traffic justice in the wake of a series of children killed by motorists in and around Jackson Heights. An estimated 200 people joined the march as protesters visited the three locations where the children died. Streetfilms produced this moving video of the demonstration:
