A 25-year-old Uber driver has been charged with raping a woman inside her New Jersey apartment over the weekend.

Investigators say the driver, 25-year-old Linden, NJ resident Efren Madrigal, had been hired to drive the unidentified victim and her friend to her apartment in Roselle Park last Saturday night. The two women reportedly invited Madrigal upstairs, where they played cards and talked. The sexual assault allegedly occurred soon after.

Prosecutors have not identified Uber as the service through which the victim hired Madrigal, but a company spokesperson confirmed to NJ.com that Madrigal had been working for Uber for three days before the alleged rape occurred. "This is a deplorable incident and the partner was removed from the platform as soon as we were made aware of the allegations," spokesperson Matthew Wing told the outlet. "We will do everything we can to assist with the investigation."

Madrigal was arrested at his home on Wednesday. He has been charged with first-degree and second-degree sexual assault, and third-degree and fourth-degree criminal sexual contact.
