Two women were fatally "gunned down" in the courtyard of a Brooklyn public housing complex on Wednesday night. The victims were reportedly sitting outside in the buildings' courtyard with children when they were killed, shortly before 9:30 p.m.
Police said a 21-year-old female was shot in the head, while a 29-year-old woman was shot in the back.
Officers responded to a 911 call about two people shot near 740 Gates Avenue, part of the Stuyvesant Gardens Houses, and found the two women unconscious and unresponsive. EMS took the 21-year-old to Woodhull Hospital where she was pronounced dead. The 29-year-old was pronounced dead at Kings County Hospital.
Police told ABC 7, there "was a large crowd in the rear of the complex when two men started firing shots." A nearby bodega worker told the NY Post, "I heard five shots. I heard people screaming and hid in my store. I didn’t want to go outside."
"They were neighbors. I see them everyday. They go to work and they come home," Curtis Campbell said to NBC New York.
A friend of the 21-year-old woman said that they worked at the Applebee's on Fulton; in an interview with the Daily News, she said, "She was a good mother and great friend. She was like a mother to all of us... This is so sad. We just want our friend to rest right now."
No arrests have been made and the police investigation is ongoing.
