The two men suspected of shooting cop Ivan Marcano—before the off-duty officer covered his wound, hunted them down, and shot and killed a third accomplice—were arrested yesterday.
Rodian Ortega, 17, and Jason Leiva, 20, have been charged with attempted murder. They were allegedly in the middle of mugging livery cabdriver Mario Abarca in the Bronx with their accomplice, Prince James, Wednesday night when Marcano, who was hanging out with his girlfriend nearby, intervened. Marcano was shot in the chest close to his heart, but as he and his girlfriend drove to get medical help, he spotted the muggers and managed to chase them down and fatally shoot James, 18.
Marcano was released from the hospital yesterday after a visit from Police Commissioner Ray Kelly and Mayor Michael Bloomberg; he was also promoted to Detective.
