Two upstate college students are dead after the rented single-engine plane they were flying crashed shortly after takeoff on Sunday afternoon. Ryan Adams and Cathryn Depuy, both 19, were first-year students at Colgate University, located two hours west of Albany, and hailed from Ridgefield, Connecticut.
The pair rented the Cessna from Hamilton Municipal Airport yesterday afternoon and made it just 10 miles after takeoff before someone aboard sent a distress signal, according to the Syracuse news station WSYR. Witnesses saw the plane go down in a wooded area outside the town of Eaton.
"There wasn't much for us to do, obviously nothing I can do as an emergency responder," Morrisville Fire Chief Rick Gorton told the Daily News. "They were already gone."
It is unclear what caused the crash or who was flying the plane, but federal investigators are expected to arrive today to begin examining the crash site. Colgate University is providing grief counseling for students and planning a memorial service for this evening.
