A hit-and-run driver struck two boys riding their bikes last night in Gravesend. Details are still scant, but the NYPD press office confirms that police and EMTs were called to the intersection of Avenue S and East 4th Street last night around 10:30 p.m. There they found two injured 12-year-old boys who had been hit by a car while riding their bikes.

The NYPD tells us one of the boys had severe road rash lacerations to his left arm, while the other had severe head trauma. Both were rushed to Lutheran Hospital, where they are now listed in stable condition, according to an NYPD spokesman. But ABC 7's sources say that the boy with head trauma is in critical condition with a cerebral hemorrhage. The news channel also reports that the driver was drag racing, and that the boys were on the same bike, with one of them riding on the pegs.

The driver of the vehicle that struck the boys fled the scene, and has not been found, nor could the NYPD press office provide any description of the vehicle. (A preliminary wire report said it was a black BMW.) The NYPD says an "investigation is ongoing"... which essentially means that once they find the driver, he can simply explain that he didn't see the cyclists and case closed!
