A trio of transgender rights supporters vandalized the heck out of a bus bearing anti-trans messages in Midtown on Thursday afternoon. The bus, an elaborate and well-funded trolling effort by conservatives bearing messages suggesting that transgender people don't and/or shouldn't be allowed to exist, was parked near the United Nations as the first stop on an anti-trans tour of the East Coast.

An NYPD spokesman said that three people, described by a bus occupant as male, approached the so-called Free Speech Bus at around 4 p.m., bashed it with a hammer, and graffitied the side. Photos of the damage show holes in the graphic panels over the windows, large cracks in the windshield, and spray-painted messages saying, "TRANS RIGHTS NOW!" and "TRANS LIBERATION!" The messages partially obscure the underlying printed slogans "It's Biology: Boys are boys... and always will be. Girls are girls... and always will be."

The bus, funded by the National Organization for Marriage, Citizen Go, and the International Organization for the Family, is a spinoff of a similar effort by far-right Catholic activists in Spain. A judge in Madrid banned the Spanish bus from the city on the grounds that it promoted discrimination and could lead to hate crimes, according to Reuters. The transphobes behind the U.S. version toned down the message from the "Boys have penises, girls have vaginas" of the original.

Somehow, the outcry of Chelsea Clinton on Twitter dot com was not enough to halt the bus's arrival here.

"This can't be considered transphobic or bigoted," NOM spokesman Joseph Grabowsk told Buzzfeed.

"We need a discussion about how to respect everyone," he told the site, going on to call being transgender "a disorder," (gender nonconformity is not classified as a psychiatric disorder) and saying that it's something that people can live "privately."

"If they thought that would silence us, they were totally wrong," NOM president Brian Brown told USA Today of the vandalism. Brown said the repairs will set the road trip back by only a day. Next up, the not-so-jolly band of genital-obsessed bigots is headed to New Haven, then Boston, and then Washington, D.C.

A study by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention found that 40 percent of transgender adults have attempted suicide. Other studies show that suicide rates are heightened among trans people who have been rejected by friends or family and who have faced discrimination.

On a related note, New York University is hosting a talk this afternoon by conservative Charles Murray, co-author of The Bell Curve, which argues that black people are genetically disposed to be less smart than white people, based on garbage science propagated by Nazi sympathizers. Murray's talk at Columbia University last night went off without much fuss apart from a small protest outside. In February, Vice co-founder and maker of racist jokes Gavin McInnes was pepper-sprayed by anarchist protesters as he tried to enter NYU for a lecture, and protesters inside subsequently shut down his talk.

McInnes has the rare distinction of having had a massive disclaimer added to an article published by Thought Catalog, that article being titled "Transphobia Is Perfectly Natural."
