Three men were arrested after they allegedly beat and hurled racial slurs at a black man in Brooklyn while trying to steal his scooter.

The News reports that the robbery and assault took place last Wednesday night on Flatbush Avenue near Glenwood Road. The 21-year-old victim, who asked for anonymity, was rolling down Flatbush on his kick-powered scooter around 11 p.m. when he was approached by the three suspects. "I think they were drunk," he told the News. "They just kept rushing after me."

The suspects—Christopher Nerry, 32; Jose Perez, 23; and Miquel Perez, 28—allegedly punched and kicked him on the ground, while calling him racial epithets. "[They] just started hitting me," the victim said, adding that he swung the scooter at his attackers. "I was scared. I was just trying to keep them away from me."

The News reports that "a brave woman who witnessed the assault followed the attackers to their nearby apartment building on Flatbush Ave. She got the scooter back." Police arrested the three men later that night. Cops told the victim that the suspects were all members of the notorious MS-13 gang.
