Emergency personnel are responding to a major diesel fuel spill inside the basement of a midtown Manhattan hotel.

Fire officials said approximately 300 gallons of fuel spilled inside the sub cellar of the Knickerbocker Hotel, a 17-story building at 41st Street and Broadway. A hazmat team has been on the scene since 8:30 a.m., and will be working over an "extensive time frame" to mitigate the situation, officials said. They are currently in the process of ventilating the building.

Surrounding streets are currently blocked off, and the city's emergency notification system is advising New Yorkers to avoid the area.

No injuries were immediately reported as a result of the spill. A cause is not yet known.
