The NYPD is trying to determine the source of a smattering of anti-gay flyers that appeared on car windshields and apartment doors throughout Jackson Heights during the last weekend in August, quoting a particularly offensive translation of Romans 1:18-32 which states that "Men committing shameless acts with men... deserve to die.”

The Jackson Heights Post first reported on the incident on August 31st, identifying flyers in Spanish and English on car windows along 82nd Street near 34th Avenue. According to the news outlet, Councilman Daniel Dromm, himself openly gay, received multiple complaints about the posters from members of his district.

"These fliers are deeply disturbing because it's advocating for the killing of gay people,” Dromm told the Times Ledger. "I've never seen that passage in bold print and it's the farthest I've ever seen anyone go with this. It is disgusting and needs to be condemned by all of the good people of Jackson Heights in the strongest possible way."

Dromm reportedly alerted 115th Precinct Deputy Inspector Brian Hennessy, who is conducting the ongoing investigation.

We have reached out to the NYPD to confirm whether the incident is being investigated as a hate crime, and will update with any additional information. Posting flyers without city permission is technically a sanitation code violation, and can incur a $75-$500 fine. The city's website has forms for reporting unwanted posters or flyers in your neighborhood.
