In the annals of embezzlement we've seen people take money from all sorts of places. Churches, banks, hospitals, government agencies, PTAs, bridge tolls, unions and so on. And now, with the guilty plea of 54-year-old Margo Reed, we can add overdue library fines to that list.
This week, Reed pleaded guilty to one count of grand larceny and one count of filing false returns. Between 2004 and 2010 she was in charge of collecting overdue fines and other revenues and then recording it and filing the taxes for the three-branch Yonkers Public Library. Except over the years she also slipped $163,582.00 out of the stacks and into her pocket. It appears she used the money to supplement her $43,323 salary.
Reed, facing up to 15 years behind bars, agreed Thursday to serve one to three years in prison. She remains free without bail until her sentencing on May 3.
