The risk of having a bike stolen in New York City is very real, though it's generally assumed the threat is diminished when you're actually riding the bike. Not so! DNAinfo reported today that a man cruising on his bike through the Financial District on August 30 was punched in the face by a perp, who stole his ride and took off.

The victim, a 65-year-old man, was reportedly riding down State Street near the Staten Island Ferry Terminal around 8:30 p.m. when he was hit in the face by the suspect with enough force to knock him over. The thug then grabbed the bike and rode away, and the victim was transported to Downtown Hospital. The thief, annoyingly, is still at large.

If there's a moral here, it's this: Ride quickly, and carry a big chain.
