A 19-year-old man was found fatally shot in the head this morning in the stairwell of the same Brooklyn housing complex where his brother was slain eight years ago. According to the NYPD, officers responding to a 911 call shortly after midnight today found Javon Craig unconscious with a gunshot wound to the head in a stairwell near the first floor of 1605 Fulton Street, which is part of the Risley Dent Towers in Bed-Stuy.
EMS pronounced Craig dead at the scene. No arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.
Police say Craig resided a few blocks away on Halsey Street; his aunt reportedly resides in the Risley Dent Towers, located on Fulton Street. Craig's distraught mother, Zeblyon Craig, 52, said that Javon's older brother Rasheed was killed in July 2009, fatally shot in a lobby of the Risley Dent Towers one day before his 21st birthday. The gunman reportedly used an assault rifle, and the murder remains unsolved.
"This is my second son that got killed at Fulton St.,” Zeblyon Craig told the Daily News. “I got one more son left and I'll be damned any more of my family, we're not going out like that no more." A friend of Rasheed Craig told the News that he was killed "47 steps from the stairwell where his younger brother later died."
The privately-owned complex offers subsidized housing, but has been the site of repeated violence. In June 2016, a man died after being shot repeatedly in the chest at the complex, and the News reports that a man died after being shot multiple time in the Towers' rear courtyard in May 2015.
