Dutchess County authorities confirmed yesterday that the body found in the Hudson River was that of a missing NYC man. Ian Jones, 32, died from an accidental drowning after the kayak he and girlfriend Tali Lennox, 22, were in capsized early Saturday.
Jones, a model and photographer, and Lennox, an artist and a daughter of singer Annie Lennox, had been kayaking early Saturday when their tandem kayak overturned near Staatsburg. They were not wearing life jackets. Jones's mother Sherron Jones told People that the couple had been at a party held at a mansion owned by hotelier Andre Balazs.
The sun had risen and the other guests at the party had already left. But the pair decided to grab a two-seater kayak on the property and take a trip to a lighthouse in the river near Staatsburg, New York, before returning to their Manhattan apartment.
The trip, however, ended in tragedy. The kayak capsized, and Ian slipped beneath the surface. "They didn't understand the danger," says Sherron of the river's strong currents.
Lennox was rescued by a passing boater while Jones's body was found on Monday, near the Poughkeepsie Yacht Club. His mother said, "It was like he was carried by a swirl of water and placed in these beautiful lily pads."
Jones was close to finishing his three years of supervised probation, stemming from a 2010 incident where he threatened to kill a plane crew during a JFK to LAX flight that had to stop in Chicago because of his behavior. The Daily Mail reports, "He was sentenced to 14 months in Fairton Federal Correctional Institute in New Jersey and ordered to pay $23,496.24 restitution to American Airlines. After his release from prison, Jones was placed on three years supervised release and ordered to participate in an alcohol treatment program and refrain from drinking, using drugs or possessing guns, ammunition and other dangerous weapons." His two-year relationship with Lennox represented a period of stability for him.
Sherron Jones also said that Lennox is "a wreck, she's a mess. She keeps saying she wishes Ian knew she was okay. He died for her. He tried to save her. She wants him to know she is okay." She added, "It was nuts how deeply in love they were."
Annie Lennox posted a photograph of a Buddha with beads around its neck, "For our beloved Ian":
Tali Lennox posted a photograph of her and Jones on Monday, writing, "My heart is shattered. My best friend, my soul mate, my partner in crime & creativity, the LOVE & LIGHT of my life is no longer with me. All the love that has been sent to me is giving me the strength to get through this. I know that he is so so happy that I was safely rescued. Let us honor & celebrate this beautiful soul & keep following the light." Her latest Instagram simply says "Follow The Light."
