The NYPD Bomb Squad shut down the intersection of West 70th Street and Broadway for over an hour on Monday night following reports of a 'suspicious device' that turned out to be an empty, locked box.

An ABC reporter noted the closure around 8:30 p.m., and the intersection was still blocked off 45 minutes later, diverting cars and buses.

According to the Daily News, the Bomb Squad responded to the intersection at 8:30 p.m. following a report of a suspicious device in the roadway's center median. Forty-five minutes later, an NYPD spokesman confirmed that it was just a locked box. The News reports that the box was attached to a bench.

Gothamist editor Jen Chung noted that traffic was diverted at the intersection of Broadway and Amsterdam, a block north of the scene, for at least two hours.
