The NYPD has arrested the man they believe went on a slashing rampage around Union Square early Wednesday morning, stabbing multiple people in the face with a boxcutter. Derrick McLeod, 24, was arrested in an East Harlem public housing complex yesterday, and police tell the Wall Street Journal that investigators recovered a boxcutter during the arrest.

McLeod, whose address is listed as 82 Macon Street in Brooklyn, is charged with five counts of assault and four counts of criminal possession of a weapon. Manhattan Chief of Detectives William Aubry tells the Journal that McLeod has been arrested 30 times as an adult and was on probation when he allegedly slashed three men in the face and punched a woman in the Union Square subway station. "He’s a violent and troubled individual," Chief Aubry said, adding that he's been treated for "emotional issues."
