Sunnyside is amazing. It has lots of trees, exceptional food, and (despite some recent hype from the New York Times) it's still relatively cheap to live there. In addition, it's super-convenient to most points in NYC via bicycle.
Now, the bicycle-life in Sunnyside just got a bunch easier with the establishment of the first bicycle-friendly business district outside of Manhattan (take that Brooklyn!). This weekend a bunch of cyclists got together with the help of Transportation Alternatives to celebrate one of the city's most bike-able neighborhoods as business owners in the neighborhood showed their support for them.
Transportation Alternatives is also leading a push to get the Department of Transportation to take a look at Queens Boulevard for a possible redesign with a dedicated bike lane. In 2013, more than 150 pedestrians and cyclists were injured, while six cyclists were killed.
You can watch the video below to get a sense of just how many bicyclists showed up (a lot)... but please guys, remember to always wear your helmets!
