Theresa Alonso, a 64-year-old grandmother in Staten Island, was fatally struck by an 18-wheeler yesterday while crossing Port Richmond Avenue. Returning to the Buckingham House retirement center for a BBQ she had helped plan, Alonso was still in the middle of Port Richmond Avenue when the light turned green (hip surgery forced her to walk slowly). The driver said he didn't see her over the hood of his truck.

The driver was not arrested or given a summons, though witnesses said he accelerated before the light turned green. Alonso's family lives in Florida, but one retirement center resident said, "She was my best friend, [and] I can't believe she's gone. She was a funny lady who made everyone laugh." He said they still held that afternoon's BBQ "in celebration of her life."
