The proposed stadium for the Jets took the first step to becoming a reality yesterday as the Empire State Development Corporation approved the stadium proposal. This was the very beginning of what will likely be an intense fight over the proposed $1.4 billion stadium, $600 million of which will come from the city and state. The stadium still needs city council and state legislator approval and may need to fend off a lawsuit by stadium opponents.
In a quote that opponents will surely love, Jets President Jay Cross said, "There is no community there. It's an urban decaying pit." But it's our urban decay pit! Approval or not, it doesn't change the fact that the stadium rendering is just plain ugly.
This news comes on top of Wednesday's news that the Jets are thinking about personal seat licenses. Gothamist wonders if winning the Super Bowl is the only way the Jets can get themselves out of all this negative PR.
