Police are searching for a truck driver who killed a 45-year-old pedestrian after speeding and jumping a curb in Chelsea this weekend.
According to the NYPD's Collision Investigation Squad, the victim was fatally struck while standing on the curb at W. 23rd Street on Saturday night, when the driver of a white Dodge Ram 2500, traveling north on 8th Avenue, made a left turn "at an apparent high rate of speed." After running over the man, the driver careened into oncoming traffic on 23rd Street, slamming his heavy duty pickup truck into two more vehicles before speeding off, authorities said.
Police have identified the victim as Bing Wan of Flushing, Queens. PIX 11 reports that Wan is believed to be an Uber driver, and was opening a car door for a passenger at the time of the collision. (The NYPD could not confirm those additional details).
Emergency responders discovered Wan lying in the roadway with head trauma, and transported him to Bellevue Hospital, where he died.
Police have not yet tracked down the driver, and an investigation is ongoing.
