The man who allegedly killed and dismembered his mother in her Bronx home was arraigned yesterday. And during his court appearance, he claimed innocence.

The Post reports that when his lawyer said that Bashid McLean, 23, needed medication, McLean said, "I didn’t do anything wrong! I don’t need anything at all. I didn’t do anything wrong." McLean was wearing a garbage bag over his clothes in court—lawyer Jerry Iannece explained that Mclean "kept urinating on himself." It's been reported that McLean may be schizophrenic.

The parts of Tanya Byrd's body were found on Tuesday when a dog noticed something in a bag on an Eagle Avenue sidewalk. The dog's owner looked closer, saw that it might be remains and called police who ultimately discovered Byrd's body in various bags. A saw of some sort was apparently found in Byrd's apartment. Sources tell DNAinfo that McLean killed his mother while she slept on Sunday night: "McLean then swiped a wad of cash from Byrd to buy the power saw he allegedly later used to chop up her body, according to sources."

McLean was charged with murder as well as unlawful dissection of a human body and hindering prosecution. His friend, William Harris, was also charged with unlawful dissection of a human body and hindering prosecution (plus criminal possession of stolen property and unlawful possession of marijuana). Both men accuse the other in the murder. From NBC New York:

Officials say the two men tell different stories. The son says he left the apartment he shared with his mother at about 3 a.m. Monday to go to the ATM. When he returned, he has told investigators, his friend had stabbed Byrd to death and threatened to kill him and his 6-year-old brother if he didn't help get rid of the body.

His friend, meanwhile, has told investigators that the son told him he killed his mother, and showed him a photograph of her, dead, asking for his friend's help in disposing of her corpse. The two suspects agree that they went to a Bronx hardware store to purchase supplies for the job, including a power saw and gloves. Investigators say there are bloodstains at the apartment, and that it appears someone tried to clean up the mess with bleach.

McLean was denied bail. His aunt told DNAinfo, "This was a premeditated murder. A year ago, he was looking up how to commit a murder without getting caught." A neighbor told the Daily News, “Bashid had a problem controlling his rage. He had creepy eyes. Didn’t like to look you in the eye — but when he did, they went right through you.”

Tanya Byrd, who was a home health aide, had another adult child plus a six-year-old with Down syndrome.
